Can’t Go Back

27 Sep

I took a trip to my hometown

I wasn’t ready for what I found

So much had changed- it was plain to see

Time made us strangers, you and me

I took a trip down memory lane

No one told me nothin’ was the same

You and I were thick as thieves

Oh beware, of what you believe

I went back to where I came from

Foolish notions soon came undone

We were so close- who would believe

This was the place I swore I’d never leave

All these pictures I can’t look at

There’s no point in looking back

I can see things will never be the same

And it’s me that you wanna blame

I know that I’m not welcome here

And you made it very clear

It’s not white and it’s not black

The reasons I can never go back

Now there’s so much disparity

Can’t even agree on reality

Now our innocence is long gone

We can’t go back- we don’t belong

Still the good ol’ days were great for us

I had your back- you had my trust

Times were simple and so carefree

Just like we needed them to be

All that was, it can’t be no more

Yet it’s so hard to shut that door

Cause you once meant the world to me

I guess times changed and so did we

/chorus/

Well, if pictures told the truth

What we had would be bulletproof

Ice cream cones and pinkie swears

Long bike rides and double dares

Catching frogs out by the pond

Always searching the great beyond

That small town charm is hard to find

Still go back there in my mind

All these pictures I can’t look at

So there’s no point in looking back

To a past that has come and gone

To a time back where we belonged

Oh no, we don’t see eye to eye

But at least we can say we tried

Nothing left to see- nothing left to do

Nothing left of me and you

It’s time we set each other free

And accept that’s how it’s gotta be

Times have changed and so have we

But we’ll always have our memories
