Meditating More Effectively

31 Dec

We’ve all heard of the benefits of meditation: stress reduction, lower depression and anxiety, improved focus and concentration, better sleep, and a sense of increased well-being and quality of life. Most of us would agree these reasons are quite compelling, and therefore many of us have tried to incorporate meditation into our daily routine. However, time and again, we end up quitting, and the reason is a relatable one- we can’t seem to get our minds to quiet down. This inevitably leaves us feeling like it’s not working and therefore, what’s the point?

Though I am no expert on meditation, I have encountered these same frustrations and I’m here to share some tips on how I’ve managed to overcome them.

First, I believe we put way too much pressure on ourselves to somehow achieve a state of enlightenment while beginning our meditation journey. The most important thing to remember is that whenever we try something new it often doesn’t go well, so it’s important to give yourself permission to suck at it- at least initially. Learning new things is akin to building a muscle; it’s only over time that we build it and become stronger. We don’t come out of the womb ripped, and thank God for our mothers that we don’t!

Second, show yourself grace when your mind is racing with random thoughts. Remember, you are not your thoughts. You are a soul having a human experience, therefore your brain will constantly say things to you about you and others that aren’t even true and aren’t in alignment with your higher self. When those thoughts inevitably appear, acknowledge them, observe them, and kindly send them on their way. Over time, this will become easier and easier and you’ll be able to focus more clearly. Patience is key.

Third, if your inability to concentrate continues to get the best of you, try focusing on your breath. I like to take three deep belly breaths as soon as I sit down to meditate. This technique is a scientifically proven method to center you because if you think about it, you cannot simultaneously focus on breathing and worry about errands you need to run, bills you need to pay, or the dickhead who nearly rear-ended you last night! This concept also applies to gratitude in that we cannot focus on all that we’re grateful for while simultaneously being sad, angry, etc. Remember, energy flows where our focus goes!

Additionally, please acknowledge that just the act of meditating (even if you don’t think it’s going well) is having all kinds of positive effects on your body. It is the only time during the entire day that we quiet ourselves down enough to explore the Source energy/God that resides in every single one of us! In this quiet state we also have unique access to our spirit guides, archangels, and ascended masters. It’s so powerful to realize they are always with us, but only when we silence our minds and do this deep dive inward are we truly with them, because most of our time is spent being preoccupied with the hustle and bustle of daily life and social media.

Lastly, try and leave any expectations at the door as far as what you think you should be experiencing. Sometimes these higher beings will communicate with you during your meditations and sometimes they won’t. Sometimes you’ll receive profound epiphanies during your meditations and sometimes you may hear crickets. Either way, please keep in mind that you’re not doing anything wrong; just take it in stride and know that whether or not you hear from these higher powers- they are always with you, full of love and support, and continuing to guide you towards your greatest good.

It is my sincerest hope that these tips will help you in your quest to reap the many benefits that meditation has to offer and that by adding this profound tool to your toolkit, you will have the guidance to navigate the year ahead. Happy holidays and Happy New Year!

Love,

Heather
